User Reviews for The Secret Life of Bees

I actually went to this movie alone, because none of my guy friends wanted to see it and all my girls saw it before me, the workaholic, could get around to it. Anywhoo, the movie is great. I tried to foresee events in the movie, but alot of it came as a surprise. I was more emotional than I thought...trying to keep my sniffles silent and my tears unnoticeable. This is definitely a movie for the mothers, daughters, sisters, and your best female friends. It was touching and really brought the bond and significance of sisterhood back into the picture. Jada Pinkett-Smith really did her thing producing this film; Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah were excellent as usual. Dakota Fanning was touching as usual. But Alicia Keys really amazed me in this movie. Kudos to her!! A definite 5 stars!

The Secret Life of Bees belongs in part to the troubled genre of “magical Negro” stories, in which a white protagonist is somehow enlightened or rescued by a particularly special black person (Jim in Huck Finn is an early example). But happily, Monk Kidd's novel and its adaptation by Gina Prince-Bythewood avoids stereotyping and easy answers, presenting a coming-of-age story that goes easy on the life lessons and forced moments of racial understanding. Crowded with vibrant characters and a wealth of talent, Secret Life of Bees is cuddly enough for Oprah but never cloying, a refreshing take on the more standard, calculated stories of female empowerment.

I loved this movie, it takes you back to the slavery days with reality, but the twist of it is wonderful. The Gentle Queen Latifah, and Alicia along with Jennifer, acting is SUPERB! It was most wonderful seeing them as entreprenuers of honey and had the best honey in their town, and how they as African descendants ran their business top notch. it also showed how Alicia Keys played the sophisticated woman who didn't want to get tied down, but at the end buckled. :-) I went by myself but should have went with a woman, this is perfect for a cuddling movie, and you get knowledge out of it. Great Movie.

Pros: Very Subtle and loving.

Cons: To short, and Latifah should of had the chance to knock out that guy

Get ready to cry a river so bring a box of tissue with you. The actresses have the ability to touch you where you thought you couldn't be touched. That door of my heart was locked and I threw away the key away and what happens is before you know it they are in your heart. And you are like how did you get there? ? Great movie, wonderful plot and story line. Keeps your attention. I will go see it again and buy it for my library too!

i haven't yet seen the movie but i can't put the book down. went online to see when the movie was playing tonight because within the hour i will be done with a incredible book that i couldn't put down for a moment. so if you were touched by the movie the way i've been touched by the book you'll want to go out and get this book to read. and possibly if anything was left out in the movie it will be in the book i'm sure.

an amazing movie with extremely talented actors and actresses. This movie made me laugh and cry, it was deep, emotional and left you wanting more. A definite recommendation from me. A great movie to go out with friends (men may not want to see it, but I think if they watch it they will enjoy it as well). I just wish there was more to it, so many more details I wish I knew. I never read the book... but guarantee I will now!

Pros: Great movie and cast

Cons: It ended
