I had a great experience tonite - I ate at the sushi counter. The sushi chefs were very friendly and the food was excellent at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend Tsunami !!!

My husband dined at Tsunami last Saturday night. We were very displeased with our experience. The tables were so close to the kitchen that we had to listen to a woman behind the counter complain to our waiter about how my husband had requested his order. Every sushi roll seemed to have smoked salmon or eel or both (there are other ingredients!). The fish we received was not at all fresh. It is a little scary when a tekka maki roll has tuna that is a washed out pink color. I couldn't even choke down the rest of the roll. That is $75 I'll never see again.

Tsunami is probably the best sushi bar in Salt Lake. The fish is always fresh and the service is Great. Very clean toiletries and kitchen. Parking is usually not a problem except for the Union Heights location on the weekends. I highly recommend Tsunami to anybody even if you do not like sushi, they have the best ribs i have ever had!!! Eat here trust me
Pros: Fresh fish and other items on menu, Service
Cons: parking on weekends

my Personal experience was great fast seating friendly service...... I thought the portions were perfect but thats because I don't visit all you can eat buffets' . If your looking for a ROMANTIC quiet place for a special occassion this is it ...........the only thing I didn't like was yes there was no place mats and I believe they could've really done something out of the ordinary with some the have the potentual to play around with that so that much I'll agree!!
Pros: The place to Impress ....... Comfortable
Cons: You have to have the taste for good food to know what you getting

I love sushi, and this is not the place for anyone who loves sushi. The place is very small and cramped so do expect to be sitting very close to other people or at tables that feel awkward because they are trying to fit as many people in as possible. One thing I noticed right off the bat, there are NO Japanese people to be seen anywhere. I thought I would give it a chance anyway but the sushi reflected the lack of culture. The fish was not fresh (slightly discolored at the edges), the rolls were loosely rolled making it hard to get it to your mouth in one piece, the rice is not seasoned correctly and it menu is WAY over-priced for what you get. The service was nothing stellar, sushi plates piled up on our table and were only collected when the bill was dropped. If you love sushi, this is not the place to go - try Kyoto where a REAL, live, Japanese person who knows what they are doing places beautiful, delicious pieces of sushi in front of you.
Pros: Next to the dollar theater.
Cons: Bad, expensive sushi, felt like a tin can, old fish.

I am a regular at Tsunami, I there at least twice a week. Their tempura fried rolls are excellent, I definitely suggest "DTH" (the DTH sauce is amazing, I always ask for an extra side) and Don Juan, which has cream cheese. Coco Cabbana and Sunshine rolls are also between my favorites, both come with tempura fried shrimp (Coco Cabbana has coconut shrimp tempura fried). Their lunch boxes are also not bad, Teriyaki Pork is between my favorites. For entree Inari Sushi and Edamame. For desert, tempura fried vanilla ice cream. The service is pretty good, the place is full most of the time so you're better off getting reservations during the weekends.
Pros: Variety, amazing sauces, good atmosphere
Cons: Can be packed on the weekends

We went on a weeknight so it was not crowded. I have never been to a restrauant where there isnt any type of place mat. The food was way over priced. The rolls were not rolled tight so everything fell apart the minute you put it in soy sauce. Portion size not worth the money. Taste was good, I have never been to a sushi bar where there wasnt a least one japanese chef working. Did not meet expectations... If you want real quality sushi go to Sushi Express on 7th east and 7800s. They have great quality fish and very reasonable prices............HOLE IN THE WALL BUT WE LOVE IT.. YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED :)
Pros: Taste Fine
Cons: To small of portions for the money

For a great sushi restaurant you need great sushi period. Then comes the ambiance, service, etc. and Tsunami didn't impress me at all on all of those accounts and I don't see wasting my time and money here when the Happy Sumo is so close by and has the best sushi I've ever had. Then I would go with Takashi. And if they weren't around I'd go to my local supermarket and make my own. Don't bother.
Cons: Sushi

After trying quite a number of other Sushi restaurants throughout Salt Lake and Utah counties, we have settled on only 1 restaurant (2 locations) where we will actually go for Sushi. We are done with the airheaded waitresses at Happy Sumo, and the careless preparation and non-fresh fish there. We have never had a bad experience at Tsunami ever, and we have been dozens of times now. We go at least 3-4 times a month, and never miss an opportunity to bring a new friend or give a glowing recommendation on Tsunami. We have a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Our friends who often accompany us also have young kids. The staff have been nothing but accomadating and welcoming to us and our kids every time. If we go in a big enough party on the weekends to the Ft Union location, we even get sat upstairs which is nice since the kids can get up and wander around and play without bugging other customers. Salem is a great manager. Hillary and Jillian are great servers. We've had countless other good servers, they just don't stick out in my mind as well as these two. Our favorites include: surf & turf roll (not always listed on menu), green goblin (ditto), sunshine roll, shrimp tempura roll with soy paper (less expensive alternative to sunsine), aloha roll with the jalapeno and mango, crunchy tuna roll, tokyo cowboy, fire breathing dragon roll, montauk roll, and at the very top of our list is the escolar nigiri. I will usually get 4-8 pieces of this nigiri each time I go, so good!!! The valet parking at the Ft Union location is nice as good spots are hard to come by. Tsunami not only takes but encourages reservations, in stark contrast to places like Happy Sumo where we have had to wait upwards of 90 minutes or be told by an ignorant waitress 2+ hours before close that they won't be able to help us at all. My only complaint about Tsunami is that there isn't a location in Utah county, although their 2006 expansion to Ft Union is definitely a step in the right direction.
Pros: Upscale contemporary decor, fresh fish, lots of variety in the menu, talented preparation, great service, take reservations
Cons: none!

I went to Tsunami in Midvale with a bunch of my friends last week. I was really impressed by the clean and beautiful interior. It is such a pleasure to see that the moment we step into the restaurant, we are greeted with smiling and friendly faces. From the hostess to the server, everyone was so welcoming and had such a positive attitude. We had a great server who took her time to explain the menu to us in a very entertaining way and at the same time made us feel very relaxed and happy. We ordered a number of things including the Miso Marinated Black Cod, which was so fresh and delicious that it seemed like they just caught it right before they cooked it. We ordered the Seared Ahi salad to share along with other small plates like the fried spring rolls, both tasted excellent. The fried spring rolls didn’t seem very Japanese and more like Vietnamese or Thai—regardless they were some of the best fried spring rolls I’ve ever had. Next we ordered a bunch of sashimi. The yellow tail was firm and fresh. Yummy. We also ordered a lot of rolls like Montauk, TNT, Tokyo Cowboy, Sunshine and Aloha. They were all fabulous and I would highly recommend any of those! What I really liked about their rolls versus other places I’ve tried is the freshness and flavor; the rolls here are so much more creative than other places. Our total evening was great and we really enjoyed ourselves very much. The staff is attentive and the food is among the best. Our food bill was pretty pricey but then again we did order a bunch of food. We would definitely go back.
Pros: Clean, Nice Decor, Great Food & Staff, Fresh Fish
Cons: None
