The Scene
Tsunami's understated decor features a mix of tapestries emblazoned with Japanese symbols and exquisite landscape woodcuts. Located in Sugarhouse, it attracts an urbane clientele--a cross-section of young hipsters, working professionals and upscale families--all drawn by the restaurant's welcoming vibe and killer sushi. Patrons can enjoy relatively intimate dining at candlelit booths or tables, or experience a more casual, communal vibe at the lively sushi bar.
The Food
Forgo the combination dinner your first time--ordering several appetizers is the best way to sample the full range of delicacies. Standouts include Tsunami shrimp, a spicy baked treat served in teriyaki-like sauce and portioned for easy sharing. If you're in the mood for spring rolls, order the fresh veggie version with peanut sauce, not the overly crisp fried wonton and pork variety. Diehard sushi fans will not be disappointed, as the chefs craft classic rolls like the spider (soft-shell crab) and the visually stunning freshwater eel-based caterpillar roll (featuring faux antennae) with expertise.

I had a great experience tonite - I ate at the sushi counter. The sushi chefs were very friendly and the food was excellent at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend Tsunami !!!

My husband dined at Tsunami last Saturday night. We were very displeased with our experience. The tables were so close to the kitchen that we had to listen to a woman behind the counter complain to our waiter about how my husband had requested his order. Every sushi roll seemed to have smoked salmon or eel or both (there are other ingredients!). The fish we received was not at all fresh. It is a little scary when a tekka maki roll has tuna that is a washed out pink color. I couldn't even choke down the rest of the roll. That is $75 I'll never see again.
